Loki - The arrival

Client: Marvel Studios
VFX: Framestore (London, UK)

Arriving at the end of post-production, I was thrown straight into the deep end with this shot. The brief was simple: to make this shot both mysterious and funny, given the presence of Loki. So I used our footage library to find some misty elements, which I used to cover up Loki. It didn't take long for the client to approve the look. All that remained to be done was to fine-tune the details of the lighting, the details of the ship and so on.

The technical challenge also came in the fact that Loki's body and facial acting were on two separate plates. So I had to play around with tracking and keying techniques, synchronize all the body acting with the head acting, and blend them into one. Once this was settled, the entire foreground of the crowd was a mix of keying and roto to give depth to the shot by passing a hint of mist between the actors. And of course, all the compositing work with the various 3D elements I was given to integrate.
